Albert Einstein said, “Once you stop learning you start dying.” Perhaps there's never been a statement more true than this one. Learning is a critical component to becoming a better person, both personally and professionally. But we don't have to go about it alone. We can learn from others all over the world who have already learned many valuable life lessons. Through books, we learn about mistakes others have made in their life allowing us to learn their lessons and pick up where they left off. Why make the same mistakes others have made? With a new year upon us, it's a great time to look at your goals for the upcoming year. A few years ago, I set a goal to read 24 non-fiction, self-improvement books, and at the end of that year, I felt like I had learned and grown a lot. I put a lot of my new knowledge into action for my promotional products distributorship and had a very successful year. During a typical year, I do usually read at least a few books per month, which includes both non-fiction and fiction books. For 2018, I'm again committing to reading 24 non-fiction books for self-improvement. My hope is it will help me to continue to grow into a better husband, father, friend, and leader. I will, of course, also be reading quite a few fiction books along the way. Announcing this firm commitment is my way of keeping me motivated and on track.

My 2018 Reading List

So far, these are the non-fiction books on my list to read in 2018. Of course, more books will be added to this list throughout the year. I may decide to nix a title or two on the list in lieu of new discoveries, but below you will find my starting list from which to choose for 2018. Most of these books have been published within the past year, but there are a few older titles I haven't read yet. I am open to suggestions, so please feel free to offer your suggestions for books that aren't on this list.

“The best way to spread Christmas, is cheer singing loud for all to hear.” - Buddy the Elf Let's Go CarolingWhen the holiday season is upon us, we all strive to go that extra mile for not just those we know and love, but also for those in our community who are not as fortunate. Making gifts, giving donations, these are all wonderful ways to help out during the holidays. If you are looking for something a little different this year, then I have a recommendation for you. A couple of our team members here at Perfect Imprints are members of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, which is a group dedicated to welcoming the new businesses into our fantastic chamber as well as volunteering in the community. The Ambassadors are a very diverse group of people with everyone from small business owners to retirees to corporate executives and volunteers. You could say we come from all walks of life. The people in this group never cease to amaze me. In years prior, for the holidays we have collected donations for local charities and delivered gifts to organizations in need. This year the group tried something new, but very old at the same time.

At Perfect Imprints we strive to be involved in our community.  Donna found her way by getting more involved in the Chamber of Commerce by joining their Ambassador committee.  One of the benefits of the Ambassadors  is the mentoring they offer to new chamber members to help guide them through the Chamber so they can get the most value for their membership.  Since Donna had developed a mentoring program at her previous company she thought it would be a good fit to become a mentor with Perfect Imprints.  She was given Jobs4U to mentor.

Not All Those Who Wander Are LostIn the poem, "All That is Gold Does Not Glitter," by J. R. R. Tolkien, the poet writes, Not All those who wander are lost. By itself, this single line from the poem is extremely thought-provoking. Is wandering really that bad like society eludes? Don't we sometimes NEED to wander? I think so and here's why. We are deep into the digital age and it can be difficult to find a spare moment to simply wander, without the distractions from negative media, opinions from others, and other invasive technology. I do wholeheartedly embrace the digital age and all it offers; however, I am also painfully aware that overexposure to it not only kills creativity, but it also completely squashes it.

Dream Big - Think BigEveryone has experienced the difficult process of making changes within an organization. Whether it be within your company, your church, or non-profit organization, sometimes creating change takes longer than desired. You have to get feedback from managers, board members, donors, stockholders, etc. Then the proposal has to be discussed to death. Everyone wants to put in their two cents. Next it has to be finalized by management, who sometimes have no idea what it's like on the front lines. If approved, there is often a waiting period before the new policy goes into effect. This drawn out process can certainly limit you when making company-wide changes. However, you can make changes immediately with yourself which can create a huge ripple effect to those around you.

Here are a few small changes YOU can make that will help you both personally and professionally.

The world of commerce is cluttered with businesses. These businesses can be simplified and identified by 3 very different categories: 1) Great companies, 2) Mediocre companies, and 3) Lousy companies. The third category is harsh, but certainly a reality in the business world. Often on the surface, it's hard to differentiate these companies. However, once you start digging around, it becomes evident to which category a company fits. Within which category does your company fit? If you want your company to be great, you must be involved with something other than yourself. You need to be active within your community and industry. By involved, I mean everyone, from management down to your newest hires. Allow your employees to volunteer for causes that are important to them, even if it is during business hours. Below are a few simple suggestions of ways to get involved and transform your company from mediocre to great. If you notice, I didn't mention anything about the lousy companies because they most likely won't be reading this blog anyway; however, if you are a lousy company, you, too, can turn it around!

We are all human. We make mistakes. We miss deadlines. We forget to follow up. We let tasks slip the crack. Sometimes we simply make a careless mistake that should have been avoided. In the business world, our own mistakes frequently impact other people or businesses in a negative...

Top Promotional Products DistributorThe other day, I was scrolling through a few Twitter profiles looking for interesting people to follow. I'm one of those who only likes to follow people with something interesting or beneficial to say. I'm not a follower just to get a follow back, nor do I necessarily follow back just because I'm being following. Anyway, as I peeked at a few profiles of other promotional products distributors, I found more than a dozen companies boasting they are the #1 promotional products company in North America. Wow! We have at least 12 companies that are #1. Not one of these dozen or so companies are on the Top 50 Distributors list in 2014 put together by Promo Marketing Magazine. So it made me think, "What does being # 1 really mean?"

Here are a few questions to ask yourself
