Impulse Marketing - Not a Good Idea

As I talk to clients, too many are making impulsive decisions when it comes to their marketing. Marketing executives and business owners field calls every day from salespeople trying to sell the latest and greatest marketing solutions for them. However, not all advertising methods work for all businesses. Every business is unique and must be strategic with their marketing efforts.

They Are Sneaky and Slimy

It’s easy to be fooled by a good salesperson who paints a glorious picture of how much your business is going to grow using their service. These sneaky, slithering sales people will stop at nothing until they have your money. They’ll use lines such as, “Are you in a position to handle the kind of volume you’re about to get?” and “Make sure you’re ready to hire help to handle the orders that will be coming in.”

They describe their services with delusions of grandeur. Don’t fall for it. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I talk to too many clients who are “stuck” in a contract for services that DON’T WORK.

Beware of the Contract

After nearly 20 years as a business owner, I’ve discovered that I’ve been burned by nearly every single marketing contract I ever signed. I’ve rarely had a company follow through with what they promised. Contracts are almost always in the favor of the company selling the service, NOT for the consumer. Is there a reason they must “lock you into a contract? Know what you are getting into before you sign.

A Better Advertising Medium

Traditional advertising mediums such as radio, television, newspaper ads, and billboards have been around for many years. However, these are ineffective for most types of businesses. This is a mass approach to reach as many people as possible. This means you are paying to advertise to thousands of people who will never use your services. That is wasteful with your advertising budget.

Promotional products, on the other hand, are a premier way to promote your brand. These advertising products are useful and tangible. They can stick around for several years, giving you maximum value for the budget spent on the items. They are the one of the most effective advertising mediums when properly used. And, as a bonus, you don’t have to be locked into a contract to get them!

With promos, you can specifically target the prospects you want to do business with your company and utilize items you are confident they will like and use. The more your prospects use the items, the more often they are reminded of your company.

One consideration to keep in mind is that you can’t shortcut your efforts when creating promotional products campaigns. You have to plan and strategize. You must have a plan in place to follow up with the recipients, kindle the relationship, then close the deal when the time is right.

If you randomly select promotional items without any thought of your end goal, you will destroy your campaign before it even begins. However, don’t fear the planning. We are here to help.
