The National Council on Fireworks Safety organizes the awareness campaign known as Fireworks Safety Month each July to educate the public about safe and responsible practices regarding the enjoyment of fireworks. This effort is by no coincidence observed in July, since Independence Day falls during the beginning of July. Each year, nearly a billion dollars in fireworks are purchased with around 10,000 serious injuries and many more other injuries as a result of careless behaviors when using fireworks. Additionally, there are around 20,000 fires caused in the U.S., as a result of firework use. Nearly 40 of those injuries are caused by illegal fireworks and 45% of injuries are from kids under the age of 14 using them. Some of the education efforts include common sense reminders about safety while using firework. Some of the safety tips can be found below.

Fireworks Safety Tips

  • Use common sense
  • Only purchase your fireworks from a reputable and reliable source.
  • Always read the product safety labels and follow their recommendations.
  • Children should NEVER use fireworks without an adult.
  • Do NOT drink alcohol while using fireworks.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors.
  • NEVER carry fireworks in your pockets.
  • Soak used fireworks in water BEFORE placing them in a trash can.
  • NEVER try to relight a "dud" firework or any fireworks with a short fuse.
  • Have a water hose ready when lighting fireworks.
  • ALWAYS wear safety goggles when lighting fireworks.
  • Observe your local laws when using fireworks.
  • Report any illegal explosives to your local fire or police department.

These are just a few common sense safety tips. Using good judgement when using fireworks will keep you and your family safer when lighting or watching fireworks.
