Why was my credit card preauthorized for more than the quoted price?
If your order quote with shipping and sales tax was $1000, your credit card will be preauthorized for 20% above that total.
However, that is not what you are being charged, unless you make changes after placing the order. Once your order ships, that same transaction will post at the quoted amount (with any additional changes you authorized along the way).
Why does it preauthorized higher than the quote?
Nearly 40% of clients make changes after placing the original order. Those changes typically include increasing the quantity (from growing event attendance, etc.), adding rush service, or upgrading to a faster shipping option. These additional charges are typically covered within the preauthorized amount.
Without the higher preauthorization, credit card transactions are often flagged by credit card companies as duplicate charges or possible fraud when a second similar attempt occurs and is declined. This saves our clients and us a lot of time of going back and forth to resolve the credit card transaction.
The bottom line is that your final credit card charge will be as agreed upon, with the only exception being minor adjustments for jurisdictional sales tax, which we attempt to accurately estimate when quoting.
Note for Promotional Items with Extended Production
Credit card preauthorizations typically only stay for about two weeks. If your items require a longer production time, your initial preauthorization will just fall away (meaning, you weren't charged). Your card will be preauthorized again after that. This is an automated process. You are NOT being charged double. The additional preauthorization will post with the correct amount once your order ships.
