The Trash Can Test: Stop Buying Trade Show Giveaways People Toss
Here is something I dare you to do at your next trade show.
Walk the floor and look in the trash cans.
I did this at a marketing conference last year, and what I saw was exactly what too many companies are still paying for:
Pens.
Keychains.
Cheap tote bags.
Thousands of dollars of branded junk, gone.
But you know what was not in there?
A portable fan one company was handing out.
A nice lip balm.
A snack pack with a clever label.
That is the lesson.
The promotional products people keep usually have at least one of three things:
Utility.
Weight.
Or nostalgia.
Utility means the item solves a real problem or fits into someone’s day.
Weight means the product feels more substantial, more valuable, or more premium than expected.
Nostalgia means it connects to a feeling, memory, experience, or moment people enjoy.
If your trade show giveaway does not pass the Trash Can Test, you may have just paid to litter.
That is why promotional product strategy matters.
Before placing your next order, picture the trash can first.
Will your item end up there before attendees even leave the building?
Or will it be used at the event, packed in a bag, carried home, kept on a desk, used in a car, shared with a coworker, or remembered later?
The best trade show giveaways are not always the most expensive. They are the ones that feel useful, valuable, timely, clever, or worth keeping.
That might be a portable fan at a hot event.
A quality lip balm people use immediately.
A snack pack with a label that makes someone smile.
A desk item that solves a problem.
A drinkware item they actually want.
A bag that feels sturdy enough to reuse.
A tech item that helps them during the day.
The goal is not to hand out more stuff.
The goal is to choose something that survives the trash can.
At Perfect Imprints, we help businesses and organizations choose trade show giveaways and promotional products that people actually keep, use, and remember.
